An Englishman: Good Morning: Totally understand why people have come to shun 3.d4 v. Carlsen's Sicilians, but perhaps the move they should shun is actually 1.e4.

dernier loup de T: Does somebody know or at least guess why Wei Yi sacrificed his Queen at move 29, instead of playing 29.Be3? Oversight? or did he not want to loose his two pawns "b" and "c"? Bad evaluation of the position in time trouble? Hoping he would have more chances to save a draw?... The engine's evaluations about that are rough, of course. But is it understandable in a practical point of view, in case he SAW that the Queen was "en prise"? (hard to imagine he did NOT see it)... Did he say something about that after the game?.... Sorry for by bad english..

dernier loup de T: Not "oversight": at contrary... I mean: "something he did not see": nor exactly "blunder"...
May-13-19  SChesshevsky: <dernier loup de T> Seems time probably had something to do with it. Wei Yi had roughly a few minutes to ten for Carlsen. It was also the 9th and final rapid game over a tough two days. So, given the time difference, Wei probably evaluated he was going to be worse either way but sacrificing the queen and trying to set up some sort of fortress was going to be easier to play and quickest. In fact, it appeared he did put on a pretty good defense having only about a minute on the clock.

HeMateMe: quite the planning. Carlsen had worked out long in advance that he could get behind Wei's awkward pawn position and wreak havoc.
