MissScarlett: The first Stanley sighting on record - apparently.

<"C. H. S. - ESSEX ST." - The game received is very well played, and shall have an early place in our "Chronicle."> (CPC, vol.i, p.384)

Very early because the next page gives a game between <Mr. C.S---> and <Mr. F--->.

Within a few months, Stanley would be meeting Staunton over the board.

Townsend wonders if Essex St. could be the one off the Strand, where the Nethersole family (including the future Mrs. Staunton) resided at the time. If Stanley already had ambitions to be a journalist, it would be ideally placed. On the other hand, it would seem to be too upmarket an address for him to have lived or even worked.
