Mar-16-23 | | goodevans: I saw 25.Rd8+ in a flash.
It's winning but it turns out it's not quite as winning as the game line. Is finding the absolute best winning line amongst several this week's theme? |
Mar-16-23 | | Mayankk: My first instinct was to play 25 Rd8 Ka7 (25 ... Rxd8 26 Qxe6) 26 Qxe6 Rxe6 27 Rxa8 fxe6 28 fxe3. And White is up an exchange. I then thought that since the Bishop was lost anyways, may as well sac it first via 25 Bxb6 cxb6 26 Rd8+ Kc7 27 Qxe6 Rxe6 28 Rxa8. The main difference was that Black King is now more active but White has one more pawn. I didn't figure out the more deadly 27 Rd7+ manoeuvre. At least not till I saw the text. |
Mar-16-23 | | Brenin: Brenin: 25 Bxb6 is the obvious way of breaching the Black K's defences. If 25 ... cxb6 then 26 Rd8+ Kc7 (or Ka7; if Rxd8 then 27 Qxe6) 27 Rd7+ Kb8 (otherwise Qa6+ with mate) 28 Rb7+ Kc8 (Ka8 29 Qa6 mate) 29 Qa6 (threat Qa8 mate) Kd8 30 Qxb6+ Kc8 31 Qc7 mate. If Black decines the B sac he is 2P down with a great big hole in his K's defences. |
Mar-16-23 | | Honey Blend: Weakening the black king's defenses with 25. ♗xb6 cxb6 26. ♕b5 seems reasonable. It's impossible to effectively defend b6 after this without heavy material loss, e.g. 26. ... ♔c7 (or ♔a7) 27. ♖d7+ etc. |
Mar-16-23 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: My try is: 25. Rd8+. Maybe, Black refuse: Ka7 26. Bxb6+ (Kxb6 27. Qb5+ Ka7 28. Qb7#) cxb6 27. Rd7+ Kb8 28. Rb7+ Kc8 29. Qa6 and mate next. (If 29. Kd8 30. Rd1+ to avoid 31... Qc8 as answer to 31. Qa8+). Therefore, Black must reply 25... Rxd8 26. Qxe6 fxe3 27. fxe3 Rde8 28. Qd5 Bc5 29. Qd3 Rxe5 30. Qa6... mate to come. Hope I didn't forget any detail this time. |
Mar-16-23 | | Mayankk: At the end a more aesthetically pleasing mate arises from 30 Qa8+ Qc8 31 Rd7# |
Mar-16-23 | | wolfshield: 25. Rd8+ Ka7
26. Ra8+
if 26... Kxa8, then Qa6+ followed by Qb7#
if 26... Rxa8 then Qxdi6 (as would happen in the game line if ...Rxd8) |
Mar-16-23 | | mel gibson: It took me a few minutes to get that solution.
I wasted a lot of time to find out that other moves had an attack that fizzled out.Stockfish 15 says:

Mar-16-23 | | agb2002: White is one pawn up.
Black threatens fxe3.
The rook on e8 is overloaded with the defense of the queen and the back rank. This suggests 25.Rd8+: A) 25... Ka7 26.Bxb6+
A.1) 26... Kxb6 27.Qb5+ Ka7 28.Qb7#.
A.2) 26... cxb6 27.Rd7+ (better than 27.Qxe6 Rxe6 28.Rxh8) A.2.a) 27... Ka8 28.Qa6+ Kb8 29.Qb7#.
A.2.b) 27... Kb8 28.Rb7+ (28.Qa6 Qxc6) 28... Kc8 (28... Ka8 29.Qa6#) 29.Qa6 and mate in two (29... Kd8 30.Qa8+ Qc8 31.Rd7#). A.2.c) 27... Qxd7 28.cxd7 looks winning (28... Rxe5 29.Qc7+ and 30.Qxe5; 28... Rd8 29.Qc7+ Ka6 30.Rc1 Bc5 31.Rxc5 Bxc5 32.e6). B) 25... Rxd8 26.Qxe6 fxe3 27.fxe3 wins decisive material. |

Mar-16-23 | | jrredfield: I saw 25 Bxb6 cxb6 almost immediately but then struggled with how to proceed. I thought maybe 26 c7 but wasn't sure. |
Mar-16-23 | | Refused: Saw 25.Rd8+ instantly and didn't bother to look for anything better, 25.Rd8 Ka7 26.Bxb6 cxb6 (Kxb6 runs into 27.Qb5+) 28.Rd7+ and this is just absolute misery. Black will have to capture on d7 and then he can't really keep the queen out of c7. e.g.
28...Qxd7 29.cxd7 Rd8 30.Qc7+ Ka8 31.e6 and now white is threatening Qxb6 and Rc1. if black tries to cover be with 31...Bc5 32.b4 makes the position collapse. |
Mar-16-23 | | cocker: 26 Qb5 is stronger than the flashy 26 Rd8+. |
Mar-16-23 | | Dohboy: Mayankk, you're right, that would have been a very pretty finish. |
Mar-16-23 | | Socrates2: I agree with Mayankk's 30. Qa8+ - there are more ways than one to skin a cat. |
Mar-16-23 | | TheaN: Add me to the list of the people going for <25.Rd8+?!> straight away. It wins, so it's arguable whether it's wrong. 25.Bxb6+! is better because of the game line, but a bit more sophisticated. In the Rd8+ line, <25....Rxd8> is significantly better than Ka7 as White still has Bxb6+. <26.Qxe6 fxe3 27.fxe3 Rhe8 28.Qc4 +-> is winning, but White still has some work to do. |
Mar-16-23 | | Cellist: I also chose 25.Rd8+ and concluded that it was clearly winning, which it is. |
Mar-16-23
 | | chrisowen: I mark it is z with favours push it is Bxb6 accomodate match it is ho acrid mid arrived it is odd Bxb6 cat; |
Mar-16-23 | | jrredfield: My engine analysis shows 25 Bxb6 (+15) clearly superior to 25 Rd8 (+5). Bd4 and Bxf4 are also in the +5 to +7 range but still well below the text move. |
Mar-16-23 | | ClassZPlaya: I went with 25. Rd8+ which also wins handily after either 25. ... Rxd8 26. Qxd6 or 25 ... Ka7 26 Qxd6 Rxd6 27. Rxh8 |

 | | Check It Out: The line I saw:
25.Rd8+ Ka7 26.Ra8+ Rxa8 27.Bxb6+ cxb6 28.Qxe6 leaving white up Queen + 2 p for R+B. Let's see what happened. |
