Apr-06-24 | | whiteshark: <Strange the Opening Explorer didn't find> I didn't describe it clearly enough: the Kamsky game is in the Mega-Database 2023, I don't have access to the cg-opening explorer at the moment. |

Apr-06-24 | | EvanTheTerrible: I respect the fact that Abasov earned the right to be here and I'm rooting for him to do well, but I hoped he would play with some ambition. Maybe this is just his style, but if he is just trying to secure half points for the extra pay, I wish FIDE would have just offered him a sum of money to give his spot to someone with ambition for more, like Abdusattorov. |

 | | Sally Simpson: Hi Evan,
This is the right strategy by Abasov. It is the same for any event. The much lower rated player uses their rating as bait. Come and get me. But you have to hold it to together and be wary that one slip and you suffer...as in his game v Caruana. The other strategy is to go potty and mix it with gambits. Simon Webb's advice 'Chess for Tigers.' these days the first strategy is better thanks to computers drawing the teeth of most gambits and opening theory getting you into a deeper middle game you might hold v a stronger player. The stronger player has to keep trying and eek a blunder of out him, as Caruana did. They might lose their patience and go for it and even lose providing the weaker player can switch their frame of mind to snatch their chance. If Nakamura wants this he will have to cook up something double-edged, not beyond him but he needs an imbalance to work with. |
Apr-06-24 | | Whitehat1963: Isnt having a bishop and a knight an advantage over two knights? But all of Nakamuras pawns are on white squares, severely limiting whites bishops movement. Who has the advantage? And whos pawn structure is better? |
Apr-06-24
 | | Korora: Well, Nakamura's ♙ structure is a barrier to Abasov's ♗. If it stays like that, I think the cat will win this one. |

 | | Sally Simpson: b6 invites Bd3 and then a Nb4 three fold. |
Apr-06-24
 | | Sally Simpson: I was right!
I said before this started Abasov would be hard to beat as White. Next time we see him live best to have him as Black. |
Apr-06-24 | | whiteshark: He simply grabbed the draw here. |
Apr-06-24 | | whiteshark: Can we have Vidit - Pragg as 2nd game, pls? - it has huge potencial! |

 | | MissScarlett: Saturday's pretty much a half-day at <Cg Towers>. |
Apr-07-24 | | dehanne: It's still possible to have a wild game in this opening if black allows Bb5. |

Apr-08-24 | | Stentor2018: For EvanTheTerrible: Abasov has not recovered from the operation and plays with severe pain in his leg |
Apr-13-24
 | | PawnSac: <Stentor2018: For EvanTheTerrible: Abasov has not recovered from the operation and plays with severe pain in his leg > maybe so, but it will hurt whether he's playing or at home watching like us. To play a field of top players is great learning and experience, to miss a chance like this would be worse pain! Even a draw as white against Nepo, Naka, Alireza, Vidit, and possibly more has to be worth some bragging rights at the local pub. |
