I'm afraid I don't understand this position at all.

May-11-25  stone free or die: I guess neither did Gukesh!

Me neither. I guess MVL got the kind of game where he really excels: Everything is concrete and move-by-move.

May-11-25  stone free or die: I think it's a highly tactical position at that point, where White's pieces are working together far better than Black's.

Play it over with an engine and explore all the ways Black's defenses fail. It's worth a study.

There is a more obvious position, where Black originally goes wrong, back at move 12, also worth mulling over:

<Black to move after 12.h4>

12...f5 is a mistake which MVL immediately pounced upon (wonder how much time he spent mulling over 13.h5 ... ?)

Yea it is a little unclear. It appears MVL is trying to weaken c6. A knight sac will pin the Bc5 after Qxc6 and b4 exploits it. He seems yo have in mind Bxe5 Rxe5 Rc4. After < 27.Bf4 > Stockfish considered several black responses.. ..Re6, ..Qd7, ..Qe7 and a few others at lower ply. Depending on black's choices, white has moves such as Bxe5 / Rc4 / Nc6 / b4 / Qb3+ and so forth, which battle to net a pawn.

< There is a more obvious position, where Black originally goes wrong, back at move 12, also worth mulling over: <Black to move after 12.h4> >

The immediate ..h5 is customary these days, although SF plays 12...Bxe3 13.Qxe3 h5 After Gukesh's ..Qf7 h6, again, SF wants to trade off the dark square bishop to minimize the color weakness of the king position.

May-13-25  stone free or die: Yes <PawnSac>. In the game the knight was lost, but different defenses lead to both the c- and d-pawn losses.

With White retaining a dominant position.

Which is why the evals are more than 3 pawns advantage. White is completely winning.

fredthebear: Ah, but there's more to that silicon math! What role is each unit performing? Attacker, Defender, Defendant, Obstructionist, Unassigned/sleeping, Jammed, Taxi driver, Greeter, Grease munchie, Bank troller, Check out, Disc sockey, Comedian, etc. etc.

27.Bf4 is merely a case of targeting: one unit aiming at/thru 2 or more opposing units (do try that sometime -- often!). There is pressure on Black's hanging pawns on c6, d6 which will become doubled and isolated -- very weak and without protection.

The d6-pawn is overworked, defending two Black minor pieces. The piece exchanges on c5 force d6-to make a choice of direction.

What's more, the pinned Ne5 (generally worth three pawns) becomes attacked twice, but defended once. The Ra7 could slide over to the e-file to defend, but that leaves the a5 pawn hanging, and the weak doubled c-pawns are ripe. White would get a passed pawn on the queenside.

Basic tactics, not highly tactical. Defenders and weak pawns are good targets. Black did not know what to do with the dark-squared bishop on the open a7-g1 diagonal. Should've traded BxB back in the early middlegame. Even then, Black would have a positional deficit.

Perhaps Gukesh was not prepared for this variation, as MVL plays the Spanish Game. This is one of his rare Scotch tries: Vachier-Lagrave vs Carlsen, 2014

May-13-25  stone free or die: <Basic tactics, not highly tactical.>

That's a contradiction worthy of contradiction.

fredthebear: You don't know what you're talking about as usual <zanzibar>. If you were in the habit of studying tactics daily, you'd know there's a difference, simple to complex, i.e. pea shooters and water pistols to assault rifles and artillery.

You're just responding to be heard as usual, a noisy trash poster, although in this case you're sorta blabbering about chess, a refreshing change from your ordinary off-topic drippings. What you understand about the position is what your computer spits out, somewhat useful if the guesswork commentary wasn't included. The diagrams are pretty, though.

Stop trolling FTB and stick to your Doll page, something you can handle. Trolling is supposed to be against CGs guidelines.
