Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-19-16  zanzibar: Where is this game from?

I think it is erroneous - supposedly it is the replay of this game:

Winawer vs S Rosenthal, 1883

(Supposedly = check the round number assignment, 4.2, and odd date 05.28)

But not only are the colors wrong(!), there is also this:

<I regret to say that the
third game between these very even
antagonists, which also resulted in
a draw, was not supplied to me by
the copyist employed for this work,
and I have been unable to make up
for the omission. In the course of
this game M. Rosenthal failed to
take advantage of one winning op
portunity, a misfortune he was un
able to retrieve, and the final draw
counted to each.—Editor.>

Editor=Minchin from TB:

TB G-199 p257/322

So, if Minchin couldn't find it, how did <CG>?

Apr-19-16  Retireborn: <z> This game with these colours and moves is present in Chessbase Big Database 2002, so it has been extant in the literature for some time.

Big 2002 does not give any round numbers or dates for this tournament, but this game is one of four (all draws) it considers "extra" to the main tournament.

Of the other two games, one (with Rosenthal White) is a stub with no moves, also drawn. I assume that this is the game that Minchin is referring to.

We've seen before that Chessbase can muddle up the "original" games with the "replays", not sure if that's what they've done here, but good luck with sorting it out.

Apr-19-16  zanzibar: Thanks for that info <RB>. I'll check the TB for the other games and report back.

Here's <CG>'s view of the pairings:

<
>>> fpair( Winawer, Rosenthal )

1883.05.30 C01 48 (R14.0) = Rosenthal -- Winawer

1883.06.06 C23 34 (R14.1) 0-1 Winawer -- Rosenthal

1883.05.01 C49 64 (R4.0) = Rosenthal -- Winawer

1883.05.02 C25 9 (R4.1) = Winawer -- Rosenthal

1883.05.28 C77 46 (R4.2) = Winawer -- Rosenthal

>

No stubs of course, the later pairing ending on a decisive.

The "wrong" color for R4 is "right" for R14 if that round started with two draws and the first is missing.

Typical monkey business - but having wrong colors is a big red flag.

Apr-19-16  zanzibar: Yes, I just rechecked the games, to ensure the dates are correct.

They are, and so the games' round numbers have to be permutated:

<
R4.2 -> R14.0
R14.0 -> R14.1
R14.1 -> R14.2
>

And it all makes sense, including the stub-game <CB> has (it's the scoring game, btw).
