An Englishman: Good Evening: Winawer and Bird seem to have had something of a running feud over Bird's Defense. The results should give pause to Bird fans--he lost 3-0--but the games are pretty entertaining.

Especially this one. Winawer conceives of a curious pawn sacrifice; the point is to exchange as many pieces as possible and get into a Knight vs. bad Bishop ending a pawn down. Bird defends well with ...Bh6!, but then eschews the proffered perpetual check by playing 36...Kd6?, allowing the Knight to invade decisively.

Apr-04-08  Knight13: Seriously, is 31...Rxa1? really necessary!!??

And 36...Kd6, letting White's knight in with Nb7 is dumb.

nizmo11: It seems that -despite the earlier inaccuracies- Bird could have drawn with 46...Bg7+!
The main idea is that after 46...Bg7+ 47.Kf4 Kd6 47.Ne4+ Kd5! 48.f6?! leads to a forced draw: 49..Bxf6! 50.Nxf6 Kd4 50.Ne4 b3!, and Black is holding after 47.Kd5 Bf6 48.Ne4 Bh4 as well.
