The gap between the two White Rook pawns looks to give Black insurmountable problems ... but appearances can be deceptive.

45 Kb4 and now Teichmann could have played 45..Kd5! 46 Kb5 Ng6!! From this square, the Knight hinders the approach of White’s King. The position is now drawn eg 47 a4 Kd6 48 a5 Kc7 49 Kc5 Kb7 50 Kd6 Ka7 51 Bd3 Nf4 52 Bf1 Nxh3 =

The game saw the continuation 45 Kb4 Kd6? 46 Kb5? Kc7 47 Kc5 Nc6? and White’s King was boss - 47..Kb7 still drew.

Instead of 46 Kb5, Alapin could win beautifully with 46 Kc3(!) Kd5 47 Kd2 Kd4 48 Bf1! Ng6 49 Ke2! Ke4 50 a4 Nf4+ 51 Kf2 Ne6 52 Bg2+ Kf4 53 a5 Nc5 (53..Nc7 is answered the same way) 54 Bb7! +-
