offramp: Almost any 26th move would have won sonce black is a piece up for a pawn. The move he played seems to be an attempt to get as many peces off the board as quick as possible - to leave a straightforward ending a clear exchange ahead:

27.axb4 Rxa1+ 28.Bxa1 d3 29.Rd2 Rxg2 30.Rxd3 Rd2+ 31.Rxd5 Rxd5 ...

Jul-02-05  JohnBoy: This one has me baffled. Black's 26th, ...Bxb4, does not make sense to me. Why does white not just capture the bishop with 27.ab4?
Jul-02-05  JohnBoy: Yeah - I was just n the process of posting that when you got to it first. Thanks! BTW, the answer precedes the question here because I deleted the original to correct a typo.

sisyphus: In Winning with 1 e4 – written before this game was played – Andy Soltis calls the complications after 19...d4 "obscure." According to Fritz, White's best is 20.Nb1, but Black is still winning.
