Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-06-07  Wikstrom: Hm. Perhaps Kramnik deserves some sort of prize for most outrageous pawn structure? Five abreast on the fourth rank. He probably did it just to see if he could get away with it. Poor old Illescas! He can't have believed his eyes.

plang: 5 b4 was a new idea in the Leningrad Dutch that has achieved some popularity since this game was played. Kramnik recommended 17..Qh5 as an improvement over Illescas's 17..Bc8?. Kramnik's sharp sacrifice 26 c5! gave him two connected passed center pawns. Kramnik was critical of 32 e5? recommending instead 32 Re1..c5 33 e5..Ng4 34 Bxb7..b3 35 Bxa6..b2 36 Nc4 winning. And again 33 exf..Bxd3 34 Nf3..Nc3 35 d7..Rd8 36 Re1..Bg6 37 Ne5..Kg9 38 Nxg6..Rxd7 would have been stronger than Kramnik's 33 Rf1?. Perhaps 34..Kg7 would have been better avoiding Kramnik's 35 e6. 35..Rxe6? allowing the exchange of rooks made White's job easier; Kramnik considered that the position after 35..Nxe6 36 d7..Rd8 37 Rxe6..Rxd7 would have been unclear. The alternative 42..c3 43 Nb3..Nc4 44 Bxa6..Nd2 45 Bd3!..Nxb3 46 a6 would have also been winning for White. Note that 43 Bxa6?..Nf3+ would have actually won for Black.
