Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-14-05  Whitehat1963: Leko simplifies like Capablanca in this game, especially once he's up a pawn. And Ivanchuk looks like he's content to let him have his way. Where might he have improved? 21. Ng7+ is the beginning of a simple and well-calculated exchange.
Feb-21-07  percyblakeney: Before winning Linares 2003 Leko had trouble getting used to the tournament, this game was followed by 29 without a win until Radjabov vs Leko, 2003

Maybe Ivanchuk lost on time here, the endgame looks far from being a trivial win for white.

plang: The line with 5 Nb5 and 6 Bf4 was a favorite of Fischers. Ivanchuk's opening play is quite original. He had to be careful with his unusual move order 7..Be7; 8..a6? would have lost material after 9 Nd5!..axb 10 Bb6..Qd7 11 Nc7+. After 11 Na3 the position was similar to the main line of the Pelikan (Sveshnikov) with Black having gained a tempo and having substituted ..Be7 for ..b5. 12 exf was new; 12 Bc4 had been played in a 1993 speed game J.Polgar-Ivanchuk. Ivanchuk's aggressive play with his center pawns was countered by Leko's clever knight play leading to a pawn-up end game which should have been drawn had Ivanchuk not overstepped.

Seirawan:"...Still there was considerable fight in the position when Ivanchuk calmly let his final minutes tick away. In the final position, Black has many drawing opportunities, as in most rook endings. Ivanchuk had his share of blunders in last year's edition of Linares as well, not the least of which was forgetting to pick up his check before leaving town, as the organizers reminded him this year!"

Leko gave the main drawing line (one of several)as 40..Re2+ 41 Kf5..Rd2 42 Rf6+..Kd5 43 Rh6..Kxd4 44 Rd6+..Ke3 45 Rxd2..Kxd2 46 Kg5..Ke3 47 f4..h4.
