Feb-14-06  Poulsen: Centralize the king!
May-13-23  Albion 1959: I first came across this game in the Spring of 1981. It featured in a book titled - Nimzo Indian Leningrad Variation by Michael McDonald-Ross, published by Batsford (I think). One of the early games that used the Bg5 move. Alekhine did not get very much from the opening and his opponent gained equality without too much effort. The knight endgame was interesting. Znosko-Borovsky was doing okay until move 35, when g5?? lost the game. Better was Kf7, followed by Ke7 to centralise the king and head off the a-pawn. Black is still in the game, but after g5?? the game was winning for white. One other point of note was on move 35 if black pushes on with e2 to win the white knight, Alekhine would win by simply giving up his knight and win by advancing his a-pawn, for example: 35. Kb5 e2
36. a4 e1=Q
37. Nxe1 Nxe1
38. a5 and the a-pawn cannot be stopped !!
The Bg5 move was a favourite of Boris Spassky where he did well with it. Though in his 1972 match against Fischer, in the two games were the Nimzo was played, he opted for the more classical lines of e3, instead of his pet move:
