Oct-11-13  thomastonk: This is the second game of two consultation games played in the Militiezaal in Amsterdam.

Here one can see Alekhine and van den Bosch: http://kranten.kb.nl/view/article/i..., and here Euwe and Weenink: http://kranten.kb.nl/view/article/i....

From a German newspaper I learned that both games were drawn. Under the picture of Euwe and Weenink, there is a similar statement, but with a little uncertainty. In fact, the game was adjourned after 45.. ♖a6, as many newspaper reports show. The further proceeding is described in http://kranten.kb.nl/view/article/i... and http://kranten.kb.nl/view/article/i..., to give two sources. Accordingly, the players analysed for two hours, but without a decision.

The final position is clearly better for Black, but White still has drawing chances. I found the game in different databases with both possible results. So, my question is: has there been a decision on the result, and if so, is the crucial analysis of the rook ending known?

Oct-11-13  thomastonk: That's the final position:

White's only move is 46.♔f5.

After 46.. ♔d6 47.♔e4 ♔e6 48.♔xd4 ♔xf6 the ending is drawn according to FinalGen (generated a 21 GB database, found 5 moves sufficient for a draw (Kc5, Kc4, Kc3, Kd3 and Ke4), where 3 moves remained unclear (Ke3, Kd5 and Rf3+)).

Any other winning ideas?

Oct-13-13  thomastonk: Dear Dutch chess friends, dear owners of the "Tijdschrift van den NSB" of 1931: did this game end with or without a result?
Oct-13-13  Calli: < is the crucial analysis of the rook ending known?>

The Skinner & Verhoeven book shows this game as a draw and has this to say about it:

"All four players agreed to analyse the position together to see if a win existed for Black. Subsequent analysis showed that White could just hold the game. This was confirmed by Botvinnik who annotated the game for Shakhmanty Listok, and also analysed the ending arising from the adjourned position." - page 394
