Aug-07-05  Whitehat1963: It looks rough for black, with a lot of potential for trouble, but what's the quickest finish? (Reigning world champ uses the Opening of the Day)

  tpstar: The primary threat is 20. Nf6+ & 21. Rxh7#. Rook moves don't help = 19 ... Rfd8 20. Bxc5 covering f8 and the mate threat is still on. Meanwhile 19 ... h5?! 20. Nf6+ Kh8/Kh7 21. Rxh5+! mates, or 20 ... Kg7 21. Nxh5+! wins handily. Finally, both Knight moves lose = 19 ... Nd5 20. Rxd5! or 19 ... Nd8 20. Nf6+ Nxf6 21. Qxg6 & 22. Bh6 & 23. Qg7#.

Nice crush.

Aug-07-05  Whitehat1963: I see that it's hopeless, but what happens after 19...f5?
Aug-07-05  Anatooly Homedepotov: 20. Nf6+ happens and mate next move (21. Rxh7#), unless Black gives up his rook for the knight.
Aug-07-05  Whitehat1963: <Anatooly Homedepotov> Great name, by the way, except that if 19...f5 is followed by 20. Nf6+, black can play the still hopeless 20...Rxf6. But now what?
Aug-07-05  Anatooly Homedepotov: <Whitehat1963> Thanks! I don't know what Alekhine would follow up with, but being a rook up for a knight plus having an advanced passer would mean curtains for black pretty quickly.
Oct-17-15  TheFocus: From a simultaneous blindfold exhibition in Paris, France at the Salle Helianthe on May 30, 1931.

Alekhine scored +6=4-0.
