May-08-04  azaris: Isn't 4. Nc3 a bit dodgy? Surprising to see Alekhine of all people playing it. Maybe the names are reversed?

paulalbert: It seems in some of Alekhine's simultaneous games that he makes provocative moves just to make it interesting for himself, I guess on the assumption that the weaker opposition will eventually let him overwhelm them with a creative attack and combination. It appears to have backfired on this occasion, although at midgame Alekhine seems to have an overwhelming lead in development for his 2Ps, and maybe there were some better possibilities than what he played.   An Englishman: Good Evening: A very weak player used 4.Nc3 against me once because, as he said after the game, "No one ever played 1...Nc6 before and I didn't know what to do."

The game continued 4...Qxd4; 5.Qe2!? and I spent half an hour thinking before playing 5...Qd8!?. I later discovered that 5.Qe2 was one of Marshall's ideas (who else?), and it is surprisingly hard to deal with White's 6.Be3 (or g5) and 7.Rd1.

I eventually won a lost game (a specialty of mine), but I still think the gambit isn't that bad. And needless to say, my opponent had no idea he was following Marshall's variation.

fredthebear: After 17.Rf3, White is doing well despite being down two pawns and the bishop pair.

Mar-03-22  Granny O Doul: I once played this gambit against a lower-rated player. Lost. Never again.
