Aug-19-02  pawntificator: Alekhine didn't lose much with the Winawer

Honza Cervenka: It seems to be very easy to beat a world champion, doesn’t it? Opening g-line was a successful attempt of suicide of Alekhine who evidently had underestimated his opponent. Black played all the game simply, naturally and excellently.
Nov-10-02  Bears092: Keep in mind this was a simul, so the loss isn't that huge of a set-back.
Nov-11-02  drukenknight: Re Honza's comments, yes, when you see a great positional player like Euwe beat him, indeed it does look easy. Bisguier says to try to look for the simplest moves first.

where do you think ALek. went wrong? It seems that 29 Ng3 might be the problem.

Honza Cervenka: I think he went wrong when he allowed to open g-line. 26.h6 was the last step to the abyss but then it has to be said that all Alekhine's plan of attack on kingside wasn't good idea. 29.Ng3 seems to be forced.
Nov-12-02  drukenknight: I thought 26 h6 was okay since it seemed better than trying to defend it. I was shocked, that black chose to open lines with 26...gxh6

So white is now a pawn ahead, he should try to exchange. why not 28 Nd6?

Honza Cervenka: 28.Nd6 is bad for simple 28...Qh5 and white loses the queen (29.Qh2 Rxg2+ etc.) or gets mate, for example 29.Qb3 Rxg2+ 30.Kf1 Rg1+ 31.Kxg1 Qh1#
Nov-13-02  drukenknight: I agree w/ above. Let's go back, what about:

13 Nxb5?

Honza Cervenka: And what is the problem for black there? 13.Nxb5 Qa5+ 14.Nc3 Rd8 gives him at least very strong initiative.
Nov-13-02  drukenknight: the way Alek. played it allowed blacks B to get good position on the long diagonal. perhaps Alek. can get better piece placement w/ e.g. 15 Qg3

  Honza Cervenka: After 13.Nxb5 Qa5+ 14.Nc3 Rd8 15.Qg3 Nce4 16.Qf3 Nd5 black is clearly better.
Nov-04-15  TheFocus: From a simultaneous exhibition in Riga, Latvia on September 12, 1935.1935.

Alekhine scored +9=16-15. This is probably his worst result in simultaneous play.
