plang: I am not an expert on the dragon but this variation looks promising for black. 18..a5 was a new move that Tiviakov said he used to avoid home preparation by Adams although this seems a little strange since Adams usually plays offbeat lines against the sicilian. The idea behind 20..Qe8 is to prepare ..e6 neutralizing whites control of the a2-g8 diagonal. Tiviakov recommends 21 a3 which stops ..a3 and creates a hole for the bishop to retreat to. 24 Bb7 would have kept the game going though black would still have been better.
Aug-19-08  Cactus: <plang> He does often play offbeat anti-sicilians, but in the Dragon he is an expert. And this 'strange move to avoid preperation' is actually now regarded as the best move.

Plaskett: Adams was prepared for this game by myself and told me, even after the debacle, that he still thought f3-f4 might be good for white.
