FSR: I'm amazed that this is the first kibitz on this theoretically important game between two super-GMs. Timman's 22.a5! has the odd distinction of being the <least> impressive #1 TN in any volume of Chess Informant thus far. It was Game 421 in Volume 53 and received more votes than any other game in that volume, yet only received a score of 46/90 (51%). Only one of the nine judges (Anand!) rated it the most important game in the volume.

I've always found the judges and their points as fun as the best game or novelty in question.

Tony Miles gave himself a 10 when he was on the panel who gave his 18. f4 against Beliavsky the only maximum for a TN in Informator history.

I wonder what Vishy thought when Jan uncorked a5. "Oh gosh....That's a very good move!" possibly

Jul-15-18  Howard: First, how many points a first-place TN gets is not necessarily significant. Keep in mind that it's all relative--that is, 46/90 is merely its point-score RELATIVE to the other 25 or so games that the judges were ruling on.

In other words, you can have some volumes where there's stiff competition for the #1 spot--in other cases, only 1-2 TN's might be in high contention for the top spot.

Inside Chess, incidentally, stated that Kasparov had already discovered that TN during his own preparations for the tournament, but...Timman beat him to it by playing it in this game.
