Winning By Double Attack, #12,383

Apr-06-13  EvanTheTerrible: @Phony Benoni, though 41.Qc6 is a nice looking move with a cool idea, 41.e7 is more accurate.

Phony Benoni: <EvanTheTerrible> Could be. I decided to feed the position to Bozo 0.5, a fifteen-year-old version of Crafty that passes for a chess engine in this household. It evaluated both <41.e7> and <41.Qc6> in the +5 to +6 range, but thought that <41.Qxa6> was slightly better than either one.

OK.

To my mind, if you have at least three moves which all evaluate between +5 and +6, the question is not which is the most accurate. The question is which one you see first. And once you see it, there's little need to look for anything better unless you're really enjoying yourself and have no other plans for the immediate future.

So I suppose 41.Qc6 goes down in the "pretty but unnecessary" category, and will never be used in a puzzle where a single solution is preferred. But I'll tell you something. If Romanishin had played 41.e7 and later had 41.Qc6 pointed out to him, he would have been unhappy with himself for missing it. Aesthetics still counts for something.
