Feb-28-07  sambo: Why would white castle kingside in this position? He's putting himself directly in the line of fire. I'm not much of a player, but that seems fairly obvious to me. Now, the question is what else he should do. Is 17. 0-0-0 good? His defense on that side isn't as strong as the kingside, but black's attack is weaker there too.

Thoughts?

Feb-28-07  extremepleasure: Sambo,

I believe that white's best move to punish the awkward 1..g5 is 2.h4! rather than d4. In that case black's pawn position on the king's side would have been seriously crippled, and thus 1...g5 would have been a completely pointless move.

Feb-28-07  Bob726: <Sambo> b5 is extremly powerful if 17.0-0-0
Mar-01-07  sambo: <Bob726: <Sambo> b5 is extremly powerful if 17.0-0-0> ah, yes. Well then, is 17.Kd2 any better?
Mar-04-07  Bob726: Why didn't White exchange queens on move 16?
Mar-04-07  TrueFiendish: <Bob726> Because he wanted to win against his lower-rated opponent. After 16.Qxg8 Raxg8 and black can shift his knight via g6 to e5, with a very good position.

Richard Taylor: White just needed to develop carefully and eventually he would have an advantage v the weakness on Basman's K-side.

Basman was/is? an attacking player so avoid attacks or too much complexity... was the order of the day!

So 5 Nge2 (Nc6) anything else? 6 Be3 etc

White is better.

Mar-10-10  WhiteRook48: 28 Rf2?? oops!
Mar-27-11  waustad: Interesting that with this line (Bc4), the higher rated player won all of the games. These off the wall openings often have one player who champions them and gives them a better w-l record than they deserve. Diemer, Grob and Bloodgood have all warped the stats for some openings. I hope that Basman is a lot better adjusted than 2 of the players mentioned above.
