Jun-10-09 | | bane77: <pawn to QB4: hi bane - Mike Basman, veteran British player noted for his originality, > Sorry, I didn't mean to harsh Basman the chessplayer. I meant on Basman from the pun. Basman chessplayer reffers to some guy Basman from the pun, for unknown reason to me. That's all I wanted to say :)
At the end, I really might like the pun. But, if I could only understand it?! |
|
Jun-10-09 | | andymac: <Bane> The pun is from "Holy [insert phrase here], Batman" which Robin used to say in the old Batman TV series. So if they cam across a prank by the evil Joker, he might say "Holy despicable trap, Batman!". You get the point? The 'pun' is Batman = Basman. |

Jun-10-09 | | Eisenheim: Can CG itself also give out a prize for worse pun? I have to be in the running for that! |

Jun-10-09 | | Benzol: Congratulations Tony. You really were watching too much TV! :) |

Jun-10-09 | | whatthefat: <Lutwidge: Hmm. I hate to quibble about this pun contest, but, uh, did chessgames.com actually randomize the voting candidates? I think I voted on about 200 games out of 2400 and I'm pretty sure I've seen all ten of these, which is statistically, well, strange. Also, I'm also pretty sure I voted on several games in succession that were obviously entered by the same entrant, suggesting again that there wasn't much of a randomization of entries.
Oh well. Good job, tpstar!>
Apparently the algorithm for selection was biased towards high scoring games and games with few votes, so as to achieve a higher degree of certainty for the good ones, and reject the truly woeful ones. Since I voted on about half the puns I didn't get to really notice this effect, but from your account it sounds like it did its job pretty well. |

Jun-10-09 | | whatthefat: Speaking of popular culture references, I would have been tempted to make a pun out of Babar on this game! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babar_... |
|
Jun-10-09 | | Thrajin: <whatthefat>, "The Elephant in the Room", perhaps? |
|
Jun-10-09 | | randomsac: Thanks for explaining the pun to me. I didn't get it, but I enjoyed the game. |

 | | Richard Taylor: I didn't get the pun either - but my brain is "..as dull and slow as barnyard clock" I did know Basman (very strong British master and inventive opening player) and Ali Babar and Batman on TV (it was on here in NZ in the mid 70s on) but I cant remember the Holy thing - hmmm - so like others I didn't "get" the pun... Very droll... |

Jun-10-09 | | tivrfoa: masterpiece |
|
Jun-10-09 | | JG27Pyth: The pun is good but the matching "Zoiks!" "KAZOW!!!" "OOOoof!" vibe of 60s Batman and this game make it special... |

Jun-10-09 | | TheTamale: And THAT'S why you don't mess with IM Basman. Thanks to Basman, my winning percentage vs. my computer has gone up...Grob as White, and 1)... h6 and 2)... g5 as Black. I don't play these variations all the time, because they're not the most enjoyable, but when I'm in need of a win (for you see, I am playing a 300-game match vs. my computer), I roll 'em out for a satisfying thrashing. |

Jun-10-09 | | kevin86: This sac circus has a funny conclusion: the black pawn does NOT queen, but it just happens that by then, black is a piece AHEAD. |

 | | Phony Benoni: I'm just grateful that none of the truly unimaginative puns found their way into the top 10. This has meant of general shortage of GOTDs from Short or Tal of late, but they've been honored enough in the past. |

Jun-10-09 | | njchess: Got to be one of the strangest games. Both players play the opening with slow, positional moves (e.g. three out of four bishops are fianchettoed), seemingly content to solidify their positions. 9. c3? is a questionable move. Why bother with a fianchetto when you place a pawn directly in front of the bishop? Since the center break will either occur on f5 or c4, c3 just wastes a move. Ne2 followed by f4 is much more active and problematic for Black. Moreover, White can still castle long or short. After 12. cxd4, Black leaves the center alone in favor of a kingside attack, which makes perfect sense. In order to break the center, White will need to attack from f5. Black not only makes it more difficult with his pawn thrust, but it starts his attack as well. As of move 14, White has now moved a pawn ten times, and Black nine times (including one pawn four times). The position, strange as it is, is essentially even when White plays 16. a3?. Although this move does not harm White's position, there are better moves such as Nbc3 that not only develop a piece but also give Black something to think about. White (finally!) starts his attack with 17. f5, but it is already too late. Black will be able to weather the storm. Still, 22. ... Qxg3+! must have come as a real shock. 26. ... Rc5! is a subtle move that ultimately wins the queen. Black knows White must block the bishop with either the knight or his queen. But only the queen can eliminate the threat. 27. Ne4 might have put up a stiffer defense for White, but you can't really blame him for capturing a rook and trying to get his central pawns on the march. Pieces drop like flies, but the end is never in doubt. |

Jun-10-09 | | theodor: <syracrophy: Wasn't 20.e6+ much better, with the idea of 20... Kxe6 21.d5+?> completely agreed! |

Jun-10-09 | | Thrajin: < Phony Benoni>, I agree. Don't forget all those horrible Fischer puns too. |

Try playing these lines against Rybka 3 and see what happens. These openings only work against weaker opposition and get thrashed by higher rated stronger opponents. |
|
Jun-10-09 | | benjinathan: I see there is a chess reference: "Holy Reshevsky!" which is said to take place: "as Dick & Bruce play 3D chess, Sammy Reshevsky was one of the great chess players of 20th century, also known as the Wonder Boy". Not sure I would have got that one as a kid... |
