  Honza Cervenka: 23.Ng5+ was entertaining but incorrect sacrifice. Black defended the position well to the move 32. Instead of 32...Na2? it was correct to play 32...Nd3! with idea 33.Qh4 Kf7 34.Bxg7 Ne1+! 35.Kf2 Nf3 36.Qh1 Rxd2+ 37.Kg3 Rd1! 38.Qh3 Kxg7 39.Rh6 Qf5 -+. White then started beautiful combination but went wrong with 35.Kg3?? (35.Kf1! was winning) and black could win after 37...Kg8! 38.Rh8+ Kxg7 39.Rxc8 Nxf4+ 40.Kg1 Nh5 41.Rc7+ Kf8 42.Rc8+ Ke7 43.Rh8 Rd1+ 44.Kh2 Qf5 45.Rh7+ Kf8 46.Rxh5 Qe5+ 47.Qf4+ Qxf4+ 48.exf4 e3 etc. After missing this chance the game was long time equal and black could force draw quite easily but from the move 58...Bd5 black lost the thread (58...Ra2+ =) and blundered with 62...Bc6?? (62...Ke2 was necessary to avoid discovered check in line 63.Rxf5 Rxa7 64.Bb8+).

"...according to the "London Evening Standard" of July 4, 1885, the game was adjourned on June 30; when resumed on July 3, and under time pressure from the organizers to end all outstanding games, 'Bird and McDonnell played it out single-handed without their partners and Bird won.'"

See London (1899) (kibitz #22).

Checking July 4th 1885, both titles are held by the <BNA> (still subsumed under the one tite), and the <Standard> is correct.

<MissScarlett>

I can see that, thanks to your handy link!

London (1899) (kibitz #22)

Yet another timely correction, thank you. I imagine Misters Urcan and Hilbert will also appreciate it.

  MissScarlett: The main point to understand is that the Evening Standard was a standalone paper, i.e., not the evening edition of the Standard. Whether there was any degree of sharing manpower, materials or sources, I wouldn't like to say.

<MissScarlett> yes thank you...

I did read your original post carefully, but your addendum makes your point crystal clear eh. I appreciate you going the extra mile on these points believe me.

<<There are two important facts that the chess historian needs to be clear about. Firstly, the information in connection with the <Evening Standard> on page 137 of Whyld's <Columns> actually relates to <The Standard>. Secondly, a similar confusion between the papers has been made by the British Newspaper Archive, whose digitized pages designated the "London Evening Standard" are actually also <The Standard>. From 1857 the two titles were distinct newspapers (although under the same ownership until 1915) and the British Library online catalog distinguishes between them correctly. If in doubt when reading a digitized chess article found through the search engine, turn to page 1 and look at the title on the masthead.>
