Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-05-18  Retireborn: A fine battle. White accumulates a serious material advantage (Q+2P v 2R) and Bisguier attempts to bale out with 46...Rxg6+, but Gheorghiu handles the resulting Tablebase positions confidently.

An interesting alternative was 46...Kh6 47.Qf4+ Kxh5 48.Qf5+ Kh6 49.Qxe6 Rc5! 50.Kf3. While this is also a tablebase win for White, it would have pushed him close to the 50-move limit.

A pawn on the 2nd rank offers the defender chances of survival if a fortress can be established. For example, this position is drawn regardless of who has the move:

If Black’s King stood on h7, he can reach the fortress. On g6 there is no chance: the King is simply too exposed.
