Honza Cervenka: Typical game of Bronstein. Very nice.
Aug-23-07  DrGridlock: I don't think I'd call it a "typical" Bronstein game. The opening doesn't appear to be tightly played for White. After 14 moves, White is down 3 pawns (though some of black's pawns are hanging and going to be won back), and the only piece he has developed past the first rank is the knight on g5. Would you really rather play White's rather than Black's position at the point in the game? Fritz sees it as -.87 for Black at that point. In fact, Fritz evaluates the game as an edge to black up until black's 21'st move - bxd5. Fritz evaluates the game as .28 for White after this move, and likes the continuation bc8 as -.78 for black.

Is this more a case of Bronstein not getting flummoxed at blowing the opening, and hanging on until his opponent gave him an opportunity to retake the initiative?

Playing tight moves after loose ones is probably skill which differentiates GM's from lesser players.

Apr-20-08  Brown: <DrGridlock> I agree with both of you. Bronstein was the type of player that sometimes played the opening "loosely."
