Mar-24-04  InspiredByMorphy: Chigorin's treatment against 4.Bc4 in the Bird's defense is instructional. After 4.Nxf3 5.Qxf3 brings Nf6 (instead of the usual Ne7) which allows a whole different kind of game for black. I like how Chigorin makes use of the f-file.
Jun-02-04  InspiredByMorphy: I was hallucinating. Ne7 is not usual in this variation, but in the more common 4.Nxd4 variation. Ne7 where I mentioned above leads to mate. In this game Chigorin's last 5 moves are great!
Sep-07-04  wall: 32.Qf1 loses quickly. Perhaps 32.Qf2 and if 32...f3 33.Qg3 f2+ 34.Kh1. However, after 32.Qf2, Black has 32...Re2 33.Qf1 f3 34.Nxf3 Nxf3 35.Kh1 Ne1 36.Qg1 Qxg2+ 37.Qxg2 Bxg2+ 38.Kg1 Nf3 mate.

32...f3 is good and the game move 33.Nxf3 loses with mate. If 33.g3, 33...f2+ 34.Kh1 Rxe4+! 35.Qg2 Qxg2 mate. If 33.gxf3 Rg4+ 34.Ng2 Rxf3 35.Qe1 Nh3+ 36.Kh1 Re3 37.Qd2 Rxg2 and 38...Rg1 mate.

Nov-17-04  tintin: The bird is good. My coach and i were arguing about it at training today, saying that most lines are bad for black. But he refuses to see that Bird, Alekhine, Staunton, Blackburne, Chigorin etc etc used it with great sucess.
Mar-10-08  popyseed: if on 33.Rxe3 then it would have been a different story
