Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-18-07  RookFile: The opening becomes more or less a Slav opening for black where he's developed his queenside bishop outside the pawn chain. Very solid setup for black, and very hard to breakdown.

offramp: 51.Nxe6 loses the game. He was counting on ...fxe6 and 52.Rxe4; but these things rarely work out.

Honza Cervenka: Why not 16...Bh2+ and only then 17...Bxd3 with extra piece? Also 29...Bf5 30.Qh5 c5! 31.dxc5 bxc5 32.bxc5 Qd4+ 33.Kf1 e3 looks much better than the text continuation.

I'd guess Chigorin missed 16...Bh2+ 17. Kh1 Bxd3 18. gxf6 Qg3!, and only calculated 16...Bh2+ 17. Kh1 Bxd3 18. gxf6 Bxf1? 19. Qxf1...

...and now 19...Qg3 20.Qe2 or 19...Qd7 20.Qg2, winning the trapped bishop in either case.
