Schlechter played 38. Ne1? He could have played 38. Kd2.

After 38. Ne1? Black could have won with 38...Kd4!-+.

Retireborn: <spingo> This is the score as given in Megabase 2021. After 36.Ne1 it seems that both players were intent on drawing by repeating moves.

I'm not convinced that 38...Kd4 would have won; my engine indicates that after 39.Nd3 Black's advantage is still only minimal. It may need a special analysis though.

May-24-22  spingo: When Schlechter's heckles, or Shackles hackles, must have gone up. I think that his spidey sense gone radio rentalĀ©TM.

After 38. Ne1 White was threatening 39. Nd3+, forking king and bishop. Chigorin played 38...Bc3, and that is the end of the game: a draw. The players are happily die prematurely.

After 38. Ne1 Kd4,
39. Nd3 Bc3.

It seems that White MUST play
40. f4. White is, I think, in Zugzwang.

I will have another look; it looks like an interesting ending. I like both Chigorin and Schlechter, they played a lot of interesting games - btw Schlechter was pretty young at this time.
