Nov-25-05  Benzol: <Cogano> If White plays 28.♘g5+ Black can play 28...♔g6 and White still has to do something about the 29...♕g2# threat.
Nov-25-05  Cogano: Hey Benzol. Thanks, you're right. I can't believe that after all the time I've spent analyzing this game I missed this move completely. I wonder if you'd be good enough to clarify something else for me: Why not block White's initial check of 26. Qb3+? Black could've but didn't, either with the rook or queen. I don't under-stand why. If you or anyone else could clarify this for me, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
Nov-25-05  Steppenwolf: No. If 28 Ng5, Kg6?, then 29. h5 wins. In all variations.
Nov-25-05  Pawsome: <Steppenwolf> <No. If 28 Ng5, Kg6?, then 29. h5 wins. In all variations.> 28. Ng5+ Kg6 29. h5+ Kxh5 30. Rh7+ Kg6 and the checks have run out.
Nov-25-05  Pawsome: Addendum(b): white is not completely out of checks - 31. Rh6+ Kxh6 32. Nf7++ Kg7 33. Bh6+ Kg6 and white appears to be lost.
Nov-25-05  Benzol: Thanks <Pawsome>.

<Cogano> If the Rook blocks 26.♕b3+ with 26...♖f7 or 26...♖e6 it can be taken with check and it's undefended as pawns don't move backwards. If Black blocks with 26...♕c4 then White has 27.♘xc4 winning the Queen for Knight.

Nov-25-05  Steppenwolf: All of you guys forgot the Qb3! It can move to Qf7+ in many variations! Back to your homeworks...

Nov-25-05  Benzol: <Steppenwolf> 28.♘g5+ ♔g6 29.♕f7+ ♖xf7!
Nov-25-05  Steppenwolf: No, Benzol. Beep, you are deleted! Try h5+! first, like I said in earlier post!
Nov-25-05  Benzol: <Steppenwolf> 28.♘g5+ ♔g6 29.h5+ ♔xh5 30.♕f7+ ♖xf7 and Black is still going to mate White next move. Are you sure you have the position set up correctly?
Nov-25-05  notsodeepthought: I must be missing something in the final position - after 30 Nd8+ Kf8 how does white continue? 31 Bh6 or 31 Ne6+ both would be countered by 31 ... Ke8 after which the rook is under attack (which would not be the case with the white knight in e5) and the threat of mate in g2 is still there. Similarly, 31 Rf7+ Ke8 with the threat of mate or winning a piece. Since Chigorin - who was a tad stronger than myself... - didn't play it, he must have seen something I dind't.
Nov-25-05  notsodeepthought: The last word of my previous post should have been "didn't". Both my spelling and my line of reasoning may be affected by the Thanksgiving eggnog kicking in sooner than I had planned.
Nov-26-05  Pawsome: <notsodeepthought> Happy Thanksgiving! I believe you were on the right track. 30.... Kf8!? 31. Bh6+ Ke8 then follow the checks: 32. Qg8+ Kd7 33. Qg7+ Kd8 34. Qf6+ Kc7 35. Qd7+ Kb6 36. Qc5+ Kb7 ( 36.....Ka6 37. Qc6+ Ka5 38. b4+ Ka4 39. Qa6#) 37. Qe7+ Ka6 38. Qa3 and the black king can't escape the checks.
Nov-26-05  notsodeepthought: <Pawsome> Thanks, that definitely helped.
Dec-25-05  Cogano: <Benzol> Sorry for the delay of this reply. I've lost track of what I kibbitzed, where & when. Thank you for cla- rifying the position for me. Season's Greetings and Happy New Year.
Mar-06-13  TheFocus: The final move was 30. Nd8+ 1/2-1/2
Nov-27-14  TheFocus: Match game 3 of the Rice Gambit match, won by Chigorin +2=3-1.

This game was played in Brighton, England on August 7, 1903.

The opening repeated up to 15.Bf4.

The final move was 30.Nd8+.

Apr-19-22  SymphonicKnight: If 30.Ng8+ and ...Kf8?? then 31.Bd6+! Ke8 (31...Rxd6? Qf7++) 32.Re7+ Kxd8 (...Kf8 33.Rxh7+ etc...) 33.Qg8+ with mate to follow.
Apr-19-22  SymphonicKnight: Apologies, I meant If 30.Nd8+ first
