Phony Benoni: The last thirty moves or so were probably unnecessary. Perhaps Delmar played on because he knew in his heart it was probably the last time he would get to play Pillsbury. Maybe he was just being a stubborn old fart trying to exhaust a sick man and get out of last place.

Or maybe he just figured that Pillsbury would come up with an artistic way to finish him off, and wanted to see it. If that's so, then Pillsbury did not disappoint.

Apr-26-13  JimNorCal: <Phony Benoni> Do you think there was bad blood between the two? Clearly Delmar was having a bad tournament. But maybe he legitimately hoped he could get all the pawns off, give up rook and bishop for the opposing rook and wangle a draw.

Phony Benoni: <JimNorCal> Never heard of any. But Delmar was "Old School", and we're talking a product of the 1857-58 Morphy Boom here.

You could well be right that he was hoping for the pawnless two knights draw.

Apr-26-13  RookFile: Well, you can also hope to win the lottery, too. The pawnless 2 knights draw here? I don't think so.
