Honza Cervenka: 14.bxa4 looks like the beginning of all white's troubles here.

IMlday: 9.d3 was pretty wimpy also. Why not 9.d4 with a normal game. 14.cxd5 looks a lot better than 14.bxa4?! but Black is already happy. Radulov was much stronger than I was then. Both he and his Bulgarian team won Bronze Medals. Looking at the opening with what we know now 7..Nbd7 seems like an inflexible move compared to 7..b6 preserving ..Na6 options. The match ended 2-2 since Suttles scored nicely on board 2 and 1 and 4 were drawn.
Mar-16-06  EmperorAtahualpa: <IMlday> If you don't mind me asking, what is so good about 9.d4? It only blocks the bishop you placed on b2 only two moves ago and it also blocks the knight.

Also the opening explorer seems to suggest 9.d3 is better than 9.d4 (although there are not many games with this position in the database). See here: Opening Explorer

IMlday: The opening explorer shows 9.d4 out scoring 9.d3 by 10%. True it blocks the ♗b2 but that makes the ♗ a 'mysterious' prophylactic piece since the natural break c6-c5 will open it up. Meanwhile White prepares e4, a 'normal' plan.
