Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-07-07  Maynard5: Although listed as an English, this game rapidly transposes into a Modern Benoni. Black's play here is thematic, exchanging the light square bishops, and using prophylactic moves (14. ... Qb8, 16. ... Re8) to restrain White's e-pawn. After White's pawn storming advance on the kingside fails, Black is able to anchor his knight on the strong square e5, culminating in the win of the exchange.

  IMlday: An echo to this Modern Benoni was Murray-Day at the 1982 Labour Day Open in Toronto. He varied 10.a4 Ba6 11.Nb5 Ne8 12.Qb3 Bc8 13.Ng3 a6 14.Nc3 Ra7 15.Qc2 h5 16.h3 Rc7!? 17.Bc4?! (Better was 17.b3.)
17..Qh4 18.Qd3 Nd7 19.f4? Bd4+ 20.Kh1
(20.Kh2 Ndf6 21.Nd1 Ng4+ 22.Kh1 Ne5 23.fxe5 Bxh3 24.Bg5 was key.) 20..Ne5! 21.Nf5 Nxd3 22.Nxh4 Nf2+ winning material since 23.Kh2 Bxc3 24.Rxf2 Be1 gets skewered.
