Mar-22-07  Autoreparaturwerkbau: 17.Bxh7+ looks like saving the day, but 18...Nc2+ screws the plan.
Mar-22-07  sambo: It makes you wonder if Falkbeer saw that. I suppose he did, given his strength, but it's funny to imagine him just devastated by 17. Bxh7+ and then perking back up with 18...Nc2+

Feb-15-16  zanzibar: Falkbeer vs Saint Amant, 1858

On 365chess.com this game is given as <St. Amant -- Falkbeer (R2.2)>

Does <CG> have the colors reversed?

Compare to:

https://books.google.com/books?id=E...

http://www.365chess.com/view_game.p...

http://chesstempo.com/gamedb/game/2...

Feb-15-16  zanzibar: OK, I may have found the source for the <CG> version of the game...

<500 Master Games of Chess
By Dr. S. Tartakower, J. du Mont>

he gives the game as <Falkbeer--St. Amant (Birmingham 1858)>

Feb-17-16  zanzibar: I have an even better source of the game as

<Falkbeer--St. Amant 22 (C01) 0-1>:

<p418/443 G-03 <Falkbeer -- St. Amant (22) 0-1 > * - Irregular ("and after a few more moves White resigned") >

From <Chess Praxis -- Staunton (1871)>, which is afaik, the first published source.

Or does <Chessbase> know something I don't? If so, where's the ref?

Retireborn: <z> In Chessbase Big 2002 this is the second of a three game match, and Saint Amant is White ie Falkbeer wins.

I notice that in other games from this tournament, Falkbeer always meets 1...e6 with 2.Nf3, although that's not conclusive of course. On the other hand the Big database has no other example of him playing 1...e6 as Black.

Big assumes that the colours alternate for each game (they do the same for Falkbeer vs Loewenthal) and it has no score for the first game with Falkbeer White. The third game is the other game that CG has, also Falkbeer White.
