Kibitzer's Corner
May-19-04  ConLaMismaMano: Why does white resign?
May-19-04  Cyphelium: The endgame is hopeless for white, since black is pawn up and white has no real counterplay. A good plan for black would be to combine the threats of b4-b3 and Rd3. Also, placing the rook on the a-file is often useful. For example 42. Rh1 Rd3 43. Re1 b4 and now 44. Nf2 fails to 44.- b3+ 45. Kc1 Bxb2+ 46. Kxb2 Rd2+ etc. Also 44. Nc5 is bad in view of 44.- Rd5, when black will reach the a-file and white loses quite fast, for example 45. Na4 Ra5 46. Nc3 Bxc3 47. bxc3 Ra1+ 48. Kd2 Rxe1 49. Kxe1 b2. Another try on the 42th move is 42. Nf2, but then 42.- b4 threatens b3+ and the a-file switch again. 43. b3 c3 44. Ne4 Ra7 is hopeless as well.
