Oct-22-04  urtley: 1.7 seconds...must have had a stopwatch on you - good job. I think if 28 ... Kd8 29 Qf8+ fails to 29 ... Kc7 30 Rxe7+ Kb8 and the king is safe but black has nothing going for him :p
Oct-22-04  sandyobrien: <DtO> post the line you're thinking of, i can't seem to see it. ---
28. ... Kd7 29. Rxe7+ Bxe7 30. Qxe7# is most obvious in after 28.

An Englishman: Good Evening: DtO, your line looks good but slower: 25.Ng5,Bd5; 26.Bxe7!,Bxa2; 27.Bxd6!,Qxc3 leaves White with a piece for two pawns. Who knows? 25...Nd5 might hold on for a while, too.
Oct-22-04  Sadgrinner: <patzer2> "Note that after 26. Ng5+ that Black cannot capture the Bishop with 26...Kxf6 because 27. Qe6+! leads to a quick mate."

For those who are interested...
27...Kg7
28. Qf7+
Whether black plays king to h6 or h8, white responds: 29.Qxh7#

Oct-22-04  crafty: 26. ♕e6+ ♔f8 27. ♘g5 ♘f5 28. g4 ♗h2+ 29. ♔f1 ♘g3+   (eval -0.46; depth 14 ply; 500M nodes)
Oct-22-04  Willem Wallekers: What if Black does "nothing" om move 27? E.g. 27 ... h6 28. ♕f7+ ♔d7 29. ♖xe7+ ♗xe7 30. ♕xe7 ♔c6 and then?
Oct-22-04  zhentil: if 27... h6 28. qf7+ kd7 29. bxe7 bxe7 30. rxe7+ picks up the queen. that's why black moved his queen.
Oct-22-04  Vischer: Interesting line is 25...♔f8 26.♘g5 ♕c6 27.♘xh7+ ♔xf7 28.♕e6+ ♔e8 29.♕xe7+! ♗xe7 30.♖xe7+ ♔d8 31.♖xb7+ etc.
Oct-22-04  Willem Wallekers: <zhentil: if 27... h6 28. qf7+ kd7 29. bxe7 bxe7 30. rxe7+ picks up the queen. that's why black moved his queen.> I thought of that too, but Black can play 29 ... hxg5 iso Bxe7.
Oct-22-04  Cyphelium: <Willem W> On 27.- h6, 28. Bxe7 seems winning:

A/ 28.- hxg5 29. Bxg5+ winning.

B/ 28.- Bxe7 29. Qf7+ and now either 29.- Kd7 30. Rxe7+ or 29.- Kd8 30. Rd1+ Bd6 31. Ne6 mate.

C/ 28. -Qxe7 29. Qf7+ Kd7 (29.- Kd8 30. Qg8+ seems to transpose) 30. Rxe7+ Bxe7 31. Qe6+ Ke8 (31.- Kd8? 32. Nf7+ Ke8 33. Nd6+) 32. Ne4! and white seems winning, for example 32.- Rc6 33. Nf6+ Kf8 34. Qg8 mate or 32.- Kf8 33. Nd6 or 32.- Kd8 33. Nd6 with a winning endgame.

Oct-22-04  DexterGordon: <Vischer>, that is indeed an interesting line! I was wondering what happens if Black turns down the bishop.

The best result for White I see in your line is ending up with ♗ + ♘ + 2♙ versus ♖. Which is surely enough to win, but did you find anything better??

Oct-22-04  noone2: What about 27 ...Qc5 my guess is that black wins
Oct-22-04  Saruman: 27.-Qc5 28.Qf7+ Kd7 29.Rd1 then what?
Oct-22-04  noone2: <Saruman> 27...Qc5 28Qf7+ Kd7 29Rd1 Bd5 game over
Oct-22-04  Nickisimo: What happens on 25...Kf8?
Oct-22-04  kevin86: Must be bishop sac week! I was looking for way to sneak the queen in to mate at g7-no dice!
Oct-22-04  patzer2: <JohnBoy> Thanks for the correction on my earlier <if 28...Kd8 then 29. Qf8+? Kc7 29. Rxe7+>. This line is not good and may be losing for White.

Clear and best is your suggestion <if 28...Kd8 29. Bxe7!>, winning the Queen after 29...Kc7 30. Bd6+! Kxd6 31. Re6+ with decisive advantage.

  tpstar: <noone2> If 27 ... Qc5 please consider 28. Nf7.

<Nickisimo> Look at Vischer's line for declining the sacrifice with 25 ... Kf8.

Oct-22-04  Willem Wallekers: <Cyphelium> Thanks, I missed that the black Q is pinned after 29. Qf7+ in line C.
Oct-22-04  World of Tomorrow: 25. Kf8 Ng5 and Black would resign 1-0. This week had lots of Bishop Sacrifices. I didn't get this puzzle right, but I liked it when I looked up the answer. Good one, <chessgames.com>!
Oct-22-04  Knight13: Nice puzzle. 28... Kd8 29. Qf8+ Kc7 30. Rxe7+ Bxe7 31. Qxe7+ Kb8 is what I thought but I don't think is better. So whatever...

Oct-22-04  tjraczko: <patzer 2> After 30.... Kxd6, there's 31.Qe7+ Kd5 32.Rd1+ Kc4 33.Qb4#
Oct-22-04  patzer2: <tjraczko> Thanks for the improvement. I saw <JohnBoy>'s win of the Queen with 31. Re6+ and didn't look for the better move 31. Qe7+! with a quick mate. Good catch!
