Oct-22-05  KingG: Nice queen side attack by Kramnik. I don't like 8. ...Qd8, even though it's been played many times. 8. ...dxc4 might have been better, with a solid position.

Once the centre becomes closed, it's a race to see wether White can strike first on the Queen side, or Black on the King side. But i think that White is already ahead by the time this race starts, and so has the advantage.

Mateo: The Queen side attack was the beginning of a Kingside attack! It is not easy to see what went wrong in Illescas play. Maybe the turning point was the trade of the light squares Bishops (26...Bxd3). After this trade, with the Queens still on the board, the light squares around the Black King are very weakened. Instead of this trade, it seems that 26...Bg4 was better. Black threatens to break White King's side with Bxf3. So maybe White has to play 27.Qe2. The mobility of his Queen would be restricted. Thus, it seems that the game would be more or les equal, dangerous for both sides.

The finish was nice. If 37…Rg5 38.Nf5! Qxf5 (38…Kh8 39.Rxg7 Qxf5 40.Rxg5+, White wins) 39.Rxg7+ Rxg7 40.Qxf5, White wins.
