Jan-25-15  Shams: Does anyone know the circumstances of this mini-match? The other game was this draw:

Campora vs Karpov, 1994

  Fusilli: <Shams> I found this:

http://www.diarioelnorte.com.ar/not...

It's an article in the local newspaper of the city of San Nicolas, in Argentina. The article, published in October 2014, reminisces on the match between GM Campora, a native of San Nicolas, and then World Champion Anatoly Karpov, 20 years earlier. It says that Karpov was invited to visit San Nicolas and play a 2-game match with Campora, taking advantage of Karpov's presence in the country... the article does not specify why Karpov was in Argentina (maybe he played a major tournament?)

The games were Sunday, October 9 (the draw), and Monday, October 10 (this game). In this game, by the way, the article says Campora ended up in severe time trouble. (That may explain his last rather panicky-looking moves.) The time control was 2 hours for 40 moves plus 60 minutes for the rest of the game. (Neither game reached the 40th move, though.)

The article mentions local sponsors who wanted to bring Karpov to the city to play the city's own GM (at the time Argentina's top player). Apparently Campora himself was very involved in the negotiations.

It was a big event in the town, and attracted lots of spectators.

Jan-28-15  Shams: <Fusilli> Thanks. Apparently Karpov was in Argentina for an unrated thematic supertournament. I'm surprised there isn't a tournament page for it, though it wasn't rated.
