Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-23-05  KingG: The game starts off as a Semi-Slav but transposes into a Queen's Gambit Declined Exchange after 5.cxd5 exd5. I would have played 5. ...exd5 instead of the boring 5. ...cxd5 as well, as it leads to a more interesting type of game.

Against Kasparov though it might have been safer to play 5. ...cxd5 and play for a draw. Playing on the Black side of this Carlsblad structure isn't very pleasant unless you can generate some counter-play on the kingside, which Rabiovich isn't able to do. So Kasparov plays the standard plan of a minority attack on the queenside to create a weakness(in this case the backward pawn on c6). From this he get an edge that he uses to win a very nice queen and pawn endgame.

It's interesting to note that had this game started of with the usual Queen's Gambit Declined Exchange move order, Kasparov almost certainly would have gone for a different plan involving playing Ne2, f3, and eventually e4, playing in the centre. Here is a good example Kasparov vs Ulf Andersson, 1988. In this game however that plan was ruled out by the early Nf3.

Dec-11-12  jusmail: A fine instructive game
