Oct-16-09  newzild: <Minor Piece Activity: Perhaps a new variant of chess could be created, in which games are composed competitively (perhaps according to a randomly chosen set of preset rules, i.e. game must contain Bxh7+ sack, should be under 25 moves, must end with ...Kh3, etc.) Whoever comes up with the most beautiful game in the eyes of the chess public wins the competition. Sounds sort of weird I admit, but I think the idea is interesting. At the very least it'd give would-be liars something constructive to pour their creative energies into. >

I agree! I had exactly the same thought yesterday after playing through this pre-arranged draw (Cramling and Lopez are married). My thought was this: if I was going to compose a pre-arranged draw with the missus, I'd concoct a brilliant sacrificial orgy culminating in perpetual check, rather than a boring symmetrical yawn...

Oct-16-09  badenbaden: "There are at least a dozen Alekhine games where the moves have been either altered or omitted by Alekhine over a period of time." Alekhine era un poco presumido y le gustaba echar un poco de "Colonia" a sus escritos... ¡ Nihil obstat!

Oct-16-09  Marmot PFL: This game looks suspicious (outside of a simul). Any decent player would analyze 10...Ne5? and see that it lost.
Oct-16-09  badenbaden: Thank you, Benzol. Es verdad: las mejores colonias se sirven en frascos pequeños...!

ajk68: This game is actually a game I showed Alekhine after seeing it on the Chessgames website. I will bring a scorecard of it with me in my time machine tonight.

1907, 1911, 1921 what's the difference?
I'll be lucky if I hit early last century!

tpstar: This one came around Tenner eleven times during the Pun Contest. Someone realized Tenner rhymes with "tenor" and then someone else tried to improve on the idea and so on. Maybe it was all the same person. The pun is especially clefer for implying a composition; a poster may have saved them the treble, but then such speculation is very bass.

Alekhine's fans laud him for saving these beauties and they tend to overlook any ethical misgivings. His detractors rightly admonish him for publishing false gamescores as a form of cheating.

Oct-16-09  WhiteRook48: great combination. Pity he didn't find it

Da que pensar, no?

Oct-17-09  Sem: <badenbaden: Sem: Da que pensar, no?> badenbaden, does that mean: it makes you think? I would be interested to know what you mean.
Oct-19-09  kevin86: Legal mate:variation 796,correct?
Aug-28-10  Lil Swine: there's legal mate variations, i like the real deal better
Aug-28-10  Lil Swine: how do you find out variations of the legal mate?
Sep-10-10  hstevens129: 14...Kg5 15.Be3+ Kh4 16.g3+ Kh3 17.Be6+ Bg4 18.Bxg4#
Nov-23-10  thomasdoss: 14...Kg5 15.Rf5+ Kh6 16.Be3+ Nf4 17.Bxf4+ Qg5 18.Bxg5# (0r) 14...Kg5 15.Rf5+ Kh4 16.Bf2+ Ng3 17.Bxg3#

if 13...Qd6, then legal mate???

Apr-08-11  bolek88: if 13,,,,Qd6 - white has two pawns more, but it's less elegant :)
Apr-08-11  bolek88: 14...Kg5 15.Rf5+ Kh6 16.Be3+ g5
Jun-08-11  sevenseaman: When O Tenner played 10. Ne5 I was positive he was going to be given the Q for a trophy from the game.
Jun-08-11  aliejin: Real or not, a beatifull

  Phony Benoni: An Il-Legal mate?
Jul-18-13  SamAtoms1980: 11.Nxe5 starts the party:

11....Bxd1 12.Bxf7+ Ke7 13.Bxc5+ Kf6<a> 14.O-O+ Kg5<b>

<a> 13....Qd6 14.Bxd6+ cxd6 15.Rxd1 and White will be a piece and two pawns up

<b> 14....Kxe5 15.Rf5#, so 14....Kg5 is better:

15.Be3+ Kh4 16.Raxd1! and the N must move because of the threat of 17.Nf3+ and 18.Be6#. (If 16....Qe7 17.Nf3+ Kg4 18.h3+ Kg3 19.Bxh5.) After 16....Nf6 is 17.g3+ Kh3 18.Be6+ Ng4 19.Bxg4#.

Who thought that it wouldn't work? It's Alekhine, of course it works.

Jul-18-13  Bartimaeus: A very interesting opening position. Black has (apparently) pinned the Knight and is threatening to disrupt White's castling. White in turn can win a pawn and prevent black's kingside castling. However, white's minor pieces are placed better. All my puzzle instincts tell me that in this position if we sac the Queen something good should ensue. Following this instinct we have :

11. Nxe5 Bxd1 (anything else and black has simply lost a piece)

Now comes the critical point on whether to capture on f7 with Knight or Bishop. Initial thoughts tended towards the Knight capture as we have a fork and can win at least the Rook. But thinking a bit deeper, the Bishop capture seems much better as we begin to develop mate threats on the King and can recover the material more easily.

A) 12. Bxf7+ Kf8 13. Bxc5+ Qe7 14. Bxe7+ Kxe7 15. Rxd1 and we're ahead at least a piece with a superior position (Note: Castling also seems a good option on move 13 instead of Bxc5+)

B) 12. Bxf7+ Ke7 13. Bxc5+ Kf6 14. 0-0+ Kg5 (not Kxe5?? Rf5#) 15. Be3+ Nf4 (Kh4 seems worse) 16. Bxf4+ Kf6 17. Bg3+ Ke7 18. Bh4+ winning the game with far superior position and material

Overall, the Queen sac seems justified and white should end up at least a piece ahead.

Looking at the game line, seems like black went for a variant of B). Not quite sure why he went that route; perhaps just wanted to get over it.

Jul-18-13  Doniez: I had the perception as to free the f line and attack the Black King with both B+R, but, as I am a real patzer, I couldn't find the combo. IMO Alekhine created an impressive attack starting by his Queen sac.
Jul-18-13  M.Hassan: "Medium"
White to play 11.?
Equal.

This is one of the classical Queen sac. games and I have seen a similar one before:

11.Nxe5 Bxd1
12.Bxf7+ Ke7
13.Bxc5+ Kf6
14.Rf1+ Kxe5
15.Rf5#
