Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-17-21  RookFile: I thought that at some point black could have tried to force white to mate with king bishop and knight vs king but don't remember how you get there now.

Probably 34...Rxa3 followed by playing to trade of White's g-pawn?

Something like 34...Rxa3 35. Bxa3 g6 36. Nxa5 Ke6 37. Bc1 g5, planning ...f5+ and ...f4.

But wasn't Schmitt a master? Surely he could mate with KBN vs K.

Jul-17-21  RookFile: Yeah, I think he would checkmate no problem. On the other hand, if you don't resign with black, I don't see what else you try for.

My 37...g5? above won't even accomplish that, because White would reply 38. g4. I'll try again.

34...Rxa3 35. Bxa3 g6 36. Nxa5 Ke6 37. Bc1 f5+ 38. Kf3 Kf6 39. Nb7 g5 40. Nc5 h5, and White can't avoid the exchange of his last pawn.
