Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-02-10  ounos: Nice moves by Ljubo. It would be a bit nicer without the 3-fold repetition though.
Jan-02-10  waustad: Was the same position repeated 3 times with the same player to move? I saw twice, but I didn't notice, however I've had a few glasses of wine. These days supposedly the computer the folks use at Amber tells them if a 50 move with no capture or pawn more situation or a 3-fold repeat occurs.
Jan-02-10  ounos: <waustad: Was the same position repeated 3 times with the same player to move?> Well, yes, unless they swapped seats in the middle of the game, dunno.
Jan-02-10  iamcoolright: <ounos>: are you sure? I think any given position occurred at most twice.

Phony Benoni: The sequence starts here, after White's 42nd move:

Now Black's rook goes to b2 three times, but White's king is on f2 once and g2 twice. White's king goes to g1 three times, but Black's rook only goes to b1 twice. Hence, no triple repetition.

Jan-03-10  ounos: Position after 43. Kg1, after 45. Kg1, after 47. Kg1:

Jan-03-10  ounos: <Phony Benoni> It's the position that must be repeated, not a sequence of moves (i.e. <Kg1 Rb1>). The moves that lead into a position are mostly irrelevant. A position in chess comprises the following: - The position of each white or black piece (obviously!) - The set of all allowable moves

The diagram above shows such a position, which is repeated 3 times, hence the player that created the 3-fold repetition (here: White) has the right to claim a draw. (Which would be a pity after such a great play by Black!)

Phony Benoni: <ounos> Oh, drat, you're right, of course. There's three examples of Black rook on b2 and White king on g1, with Black to move each time.

Now you know why I don't direct tournaments.
