Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-30-22  nummerzwei: 14.Bb2?! is commonly branded an inaccuracy since the attack on White's center with 14...Bf6! is awkward to meet. Szabo should have played 14.Be3 or else 7.Qc2.

Still, 17.Qb3 (instead of 17.Ba6?) would have left White equal or only slightly worse.

Exactly. The tactical threat Nxd4 is a no brainer for any respectable player to see. How come white did not prevent it? 17.Qb3 or 17.Qb5 work just fine.

When I see this kind of thing in cold-war games between a player from the USSR and a player from a USSR-controlled country (invariably with the USSR player on the winning side) I tend to become instantly suspicious.

My theory is that players from USSR-controlled countries, when instructed to lose, made sure to lose in an obvious way... Avoiding being crass, but letting it happen in a suspicious enough way for future generations to see through it.

Or perhaps I am just paranoid and depriving Soviet players of their legitimate credit.
