A difficult ending. Romanishin qualified for the Riga Interzonal with 8/14 in equal 3rd place, edging out Tukmakov by half a point.

70..Kd6? (the 3rd rank is key in this ending: 70..Rg3 71 c4 Rb3+! 72 Kc5 Rc3 leads to a draw)

71 Rh8? (better to get on with it: 71 c4! Rxd4 72 c5+ Ke7 73 Rh7+ Kd8 74 Rh8+! Ke7 75 c6 Rb4+ 76 Kc5 Rb1 77 c7 wins)

71..Kd7? (as before 71..Rg3! is the right path) 72 Rh8+ Ke8 73 Kc5? (the King is much better placed after 73 Kc6! Rg3 74 c4 Rd3 75 Rh4)

73...Rg3! 74 c4 Rd3? (better to X-ray the White King with 74..Rc3 when d5 is more difficult) 75 Ra7+? (75 Rh5! Ke7 - 75..Kd7? 76 d5 - 76 Re5 Kf6 77 Re1 Rc3 77 d5 wins since the Black King is cut off)

75...Kd8? (75..Rc3 draws) 76 d5? (76 Rh7 with the plan Rh5 as before) and now Beliavsky was able to reach a theoretcially drawn R+P vs R position.

Mar-07-19  Retireborn: <woldsman> Pedantic point, but Romanishin didn't (originally) qualify from this zonal; he was a replacement for someone (Hort? Kavalek? not sure) who'd dropped out.

I don't know how they separated him from Tseshkovsky & Kuzmin. Can find no trace of a playoff. Presumably the Soviets made an arbitrary decision.

woldsmandriffield: @Retireborn Not pedantic at all. Thanks for the info. Shows how costly this ending could have been for Oleg!
