Aug-01-22 | | Brenin: 18 Bg5+ (skewering the Q) Kxg5 19 Nxf7+ (forking K and Q) and Black can resign. |
|
Aug-01-22 | | Brenin: Dreadful opening play by Black. Was Dorfman playing the Swiss Gambit, not realising that this tournament was all-play-all? It seems to have worked, since he went on to finish equal first, on 6.5/11, ahead of Tal and Korchnoi. |
|
Aug-01-22 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: Very nice to begin a week and a month like this, since the King (me!) loves to capture the opponent's ♕ very early... 18.♗g5+ Bye! |
|
Aug-01-22 | | saturn2: Also 18.a4 threatening a5 'is a move' Nakamura would say.. |
|
Aug-01-22 | | get Reti: I got it, but not as fast as most Mondays. |
|
Aug-01-22 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: I took a Tuesdayish length of time on this too. Once I really believed there was no chance at a mating combination, however, I got the answer in a few seconds. |

Aug-01-22
 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: The only game in the DB with 4.c3, which seems odd--why didn't other 1.e4 players try to copy Romanishin's success? |
|
Aug-01-22 | | jrredfield: I found 18. Bg5+ but it took a fair amount of time. I actually thought of it almost instantly but couldn't at first figure out the follow up fork maneuver if Black took the Bishop with the King. So I spent too much time looking at the two knights. I even thought I had found a way to trap the Black Queen but eventually gave up and saw the correct sequence with Bg5+. |
|
Aug-01-22 | | mel gibson: This was a little more tricky than a usual Monday. The first ply was obvious but then I wondered if there was a quick checkmate? Stockfish 15 says no:

Aug-01-22 | | mel gibson: < Aug-01-22 Shangri La: Aren't you the real actor crazy man w/Danny Glover? My favorite segment was the ledge jumper.> No but my Stockfish 15 is a lethal weapon. |

Aug-01-22 | | Shangri La: That was just playing on words. Some times its good to get crazy an funny. Ye first to talk back to thee so thx mel gibson. |
|
Aug-01-22 | | agb2002: White has two extra pawns.
The alignment of Black's royal family on the d8-h4 diagonal and the knight on e5 allow 18.Bg5+ Kxg5 (else 19.Bxd8 wins decisive material) 19.Nxf7+, followed by 20.Nxd8, wins decisive material. |

Aug-01-22
 | | Dionysius1: I like that in the final position a2-a4-a5 is going to win a knight as well. |
|
Aug-01-22 | | mel gibson: <Aug-01-22 Shangri La: That was just playing on words. Some times its good to get crazy an funny. Ye first to talk back to thee so thx mel gibson.> you're welcome.
I hardly ever get a reply here despite
all my hard work.
Hopefully people appreciate a Stockfish 15 answer
from my 8 core computer. |

Aug-01-22 | | TrollKing: This is why beginners are taught 1) Do not move the same piece too many times in the opening, and 2) Do not bring the Queen out to early. Wretched opening. |
|
Aug-01-22 | | TheaN: <18.Bg5+ Kxg5 19.Nxf7+ Kf6 20.Nxd8 +->, Black's position is so in shambles there's no reason to play on. Indeed, very atypical play by Black. d5 probably comes too early, despite playable: White prepared a king side fianchetto and the queen pays the price eventually. 7....Qe6+ is sub-optimal, 8....Qa6 9.Qb3 is pretty much fatal. Someone of Dorfman's caliber should see the logical Qb3, no? |
|
Aug-01-22 | | eblunt: 11 ... ♕x♕ would be better then the text surely? At least avoids the immediate disaster looming. |
|
Aug-01-22 | | AIC: 18.Bg5+ followed by royal fork was pretty obvious, but I was afraid of some kind of a hidden mating combination. Therefore I spent a little while looking to it; couldn't see anything better, so one more Monday I didn't miss... :) |
|
Aug-01-22 | | AIC: Strange moves by black however... No wonder he got into troubles |
|
Aug-01-22
 | | Open Defence: < eblunt: 11 ... ♕x♕ would be better then the text surely? At least avoids the immediate disaster looming.> I doubt it helps much....the Q side is weak and the Black King will be in the center in most lines 12...Nd5 (to limit the White LSB's influence on the long diagonal) 13.Nb5 Na6 14.O-O and now routine moves can get Black into further trouble e.g. 14...Be7 or 14...Bg7 is met with 15.Ncd6+ OR
14.cxd4 15.Re1 Be7 16.Ncd6+ (the recurring threat) Bxd6 17.Nxd6+ Kd7 18.Nxf7 Rf8 19.Ne5+ Kc7 20.Ra4 Nb8 21.Rxd4 The main culprit early on seems to be 7...Qe6+ perhaps Bg7 or cxd4 with my preference for the latter |

[Mitch Mitchell]
Good evening, ladies and gentleman
Welcome to radio station EXP
Tonight we are featuring an interview
With a very peculiar looking gentleman
Who goes by the name Mr. Paul Caruso
On the dodgy subject of are there or are there not flying saucers or UFOs?
Um, please Mr. Caruso, could you give us your regarded opinion on this nonsense about spaceships and even space people?
[Jimi Hendrix]
Thank you
As you all know, you just can't believe everything you see and hear, can you?
Now, if you'll excuse me, I must be on my way
[Mitch Mitchell]
Eh, but, but, but, but
Huh, I don't believe it

 | | Honza Cervenka: <Brenin: Dreadful opening play by Black.> Indeed. Already 4...d5 looks quite dubious but 7...Qe6+?! with next 8...Qa6?? was fatal. 7...cxd4 8.cxd4 Bg7 9.Nc3 Qe6+ 10.Ne5 Qa6 is nothing special for black but at least it gives him a chance to get a playable game unlike to the played continuation. |
|
Aug-01-22 | | dhotts: Hard to believe a GM can make 5 Queen moves in the first 11???? This game was thrown as both players are from Ukraine and same age...Nobody above 1600 moves their Q five out 11 first moves....Note : after 5 Q moves, the Black Q ends up at her starting position. |
