Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-26-12  optimal play: Interesting position after 20...Qe8

I initially thought "Why 21.Ne5 why not 21.Bxf6 winning the exchange?"

But of course if 21.Bxf6 then 21...Qxg6 22.Be5 Nxc3! which forces 23.g3 then 23...Nxd1 24.Rxd1 Bd5 and it is Black who has won the exchange and wrested the initiative.

Good insight by Saemisch in that instance, nevertheless as the game continued it was Vukovic who showed the more incisive play.

Apr-26-12  Jason Frost: <optimal play> Nice line. It actually looks better than Saemisch's choice in the game (black hasn't won the exchange, just a pawn), though I think 24. Rxc8+ Bxc8 25. Qxd1 is preferable and white should have decent drawing chances.
Apr-26-12  optimal play: Yeah, maybe Saemisch should have gone with 21.Bxf6 after all, then follow your line through to 25.Qxd1

It seems he was overly-concerned with the loss of a pawn, and so didn't properly assess the ramifications of a possible K-side push with g5 & f4 by Vukovic.
