  plang: In his notes Shirov discusses ..17 Bg6 as an unsatisfactory alternative to ..17 Bd3.

He does not, however, mention ..17 Nc2.

After 18 Nc6..Ne3 19 Ne7+..Kh8
20 ef..Rd6 21 Nf5..ef 22 Rf5 black has not equalized but, at least, he has maintained material equality.
