Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-29-04  capanegra: Smyslov must have felt quite safe when he drew by perpetual check. However, it looks incredible to me is that he overlooked the simple 37…♖f2, which would have forced White's immediate resignation.
Jul-29-04  ughaibu: The same position but with reversed colours (I think) occured at Lodz in the first decade of last century, on that occassion the player found the winning move. I'll look for the game.
Jul-29-04  ughaibu: Capanegra: Here's the game: Chigorin vs Rubinstein, 1906
Jul-29-04  capanegra: Thanks ughaibu, certainly the position is almost identical. So, this demonstrates that not only Smyslov blundered terribly, but he also didn't read history! ;)

Benzol: Another game that has a eerie twin (See <ughaibu's> post above. It's strange that Chigorin found the win that Smyslov missed 40 years later. Does this mean that we've lost as well as gained chess knowledge over time?
Jun-25-06  suenteus po 147: Maybe Smyslov owed Lundin a favor. Or, perhaps the clock was almost out and Smyslov forced a perpetual to avoid loss on time.
Sep-09-20  jerseybob: Re 4..g6!(my exclam): Smyslov always loves to make it a Grunfeld, whether in the Slav, QGA or here in the Tarrasch.
