<28.bxc6> was a spirited attempt to win which fell short when Spassky conjured up a perpetual check.

Perhaps there were improvements for both sides?

Apr-20-18  Retireborn: <Phony Benoni> Houdini thinks that instead of 30.R1c2, 30.Rc8+ would have won or at least given winning chances.

The Convekta database gives this line; 30.Rc8+ Ke7 31.R1c7+ Kf6! 32.Kxf3 Kg5! 33.Rxf7 Qe6 34.Rxg7+ Kh5 35.Rg4 Rxf2+ 36.Kxf2 Qxe3+ with an elegant draw by stalemate.

In this line White cannot play 33.b8Q Qf6+ mates, or 33.h4+ Kh5 34.g4+ Kxh4 35.b8Q Qf6+ mates.

Unfortunately Houdini blows a hole in this concept with 31.R8c7+! The difference to the Convekta line is seen after 33.h4+ Kh5 34.g4+ Kxh4 and now White has 35.Rh1+! Kg5 36.Rh5+ Kg6 37.b8Q and 37...Qf6+ will not be mate as White now has 38.Rf5.

Is 28.bxc6 a winner then? Not according to Houdini who reckons 29...Ra2 to be a mistake and offers three ways Black can hold the draw: 29...Rxg3+, 29...Rxf2+, and 29...Rb8.

Houdini at its best, but also at its worst, as it rejects Spassky's saving move 31...Rxe3 and suggests he could have won(!) with 31...Ke7 32.Rb2 Rxf2+ 33.Kxf2 Qb8, although frankly I do not see how Black can win such a position if White does nothing.

Sep-23-24  ewan14: Interesting finish
