Kibitzer's Corner
May-08-03  AgentRgent: Reshko plays well, 38. Qxe5 (the Queen is obviously immune due to Rf8#) and 39. Qxd5 is a nice little combination.. but Spassky's 39...Rxh3+! is better.
Apr-29-07  Cannon Fodder: This is a beautiful game by Spassky. I saw the position after white's 38th move in a puzzle book, and I came up with 38 ...Qxd5 39 Bxd5 Bxh3+. Does this win too? (Obviously, Spassky's text move is best; but I'm just wondering if my answer at least leads to an advantage for Black).
Mar-08-14  Strelets: Play would have continued something like this if the rook was accepted on move 40: 40.Bxh3 Qxh3+ 41.Kg1 Qxg3+ and now there are two variations to consider. I: 42.Kh1 Qh3+ 43.Kg1 Bb6+ 44.Rf2 Bxf2+ 45.Kxf2 Qxh6 and Black is up a piece. II: 42.Qg2 Bb6+ 43.Kh1 Qh4+ [43...Be4 is good as well] 44.Qh2 Be4+ 45.Rf3 Bxf3#
Apr-06-15  A.T PhoneHome: That <39...Rxh3> was a lovely find by Boris Spassky!

More of positional mastery from Spassky here. In the 60's Spassky began to adopt more deeper playing style and coupled up with his psychologically strong character a recipe for World Championship title was found.

Apr-06-15  Howard: Good thing for Spassky, too ! His career seemed to stall a bit in the late 50's and early 60's.

But then he caught fire in the 1964 Soviet zonal, and the rest is history.

Apr-06-15  A.T PhoneHome: Yes, you've got to give him credit for going through that big bunch of games, most often meeting top dogs!

And it's good for us spectators too; Spassky deserved to become World Champion. Like consider how Spassky played against Geller. When Spassky played that Closed Sicilian..
