Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-02-17  Saniyat24: Spassky shows that in a more or less equal end-game situation, how deadly he can be, especially liked his 43rd move, 43.Rd3...that was a cheeky little move...!
Dec-02-17  Howard: Apparently, there's a typo in the above comment. Spassky's 43rd move wasn't Rd3. Besides, that move wasn't "cheeky" at all---it was 99.99% forced.
Dec-02-17  thegoodanarchist: Of course after Fischer went missing from the world, US coverage of chess went back to almost nothing, as it had been before.

So I never saw or heard of this game until now. But obviously Spassky went right on playing excellent chess for several years after Fischer took his title.

This game is proof.

Dec-02-17  thegoodanarchist: Yes, Karpov beat Spassky in the first cycle after Fischer.

But Karpov was young, so he had the advantage of youth. A person must take advantage of his youth while he is young ;)

Dec-03-17  Howard: Well, of course Spassky continued to play "excellent chess" for several years after losing his title.

Anyone who has doubts can consider the fact that he was ranked third on the FIDE list in early 1978 I believe. He also tied for first with Karpov at the super-strong Buguano tournament in '78.

Dec-03-17  shalgo: According to Chess Results 1978-1980, Spassky won this tournament with 6.5/9, half a point ahead of Bellon Lopez, Miles, Hort, and Gligoric, who all finished on 6/9.

Spassky of course remained very strong for several years after his losses to Fischer and Karpov, even if he probably did not work on his chess quite as much anymore. My impression of his match with Karpov was that the quality of play was extremely high, certainly higher than in the Karpov-Korchnoi world championship matches.

Dec-03-17  ZonszeinP: Karpov certainly played brillianter against Spassky than in any match against Korchnoi
