eternaloptimist: Who can forget Speelman (outside of ppl that have Alzheimer's, dimentia, amnesia etc)? If u were keeping track of the Candidates Matches back in '88 -> '89, then u should remember the guy w/ the coke bottle lenses in his glasses, long frizzy hair & a creative unorthodox style that's all his own...Speelman! He beat Seirawan & Short before he was eliminated by Timman in the semi-final. Karpov defeated Yusupov (who had a very limited opening repertoire) in the other semi-final & Karpov easily disposed of Timman in the final. Kasparov successfully defended his title vs Karpov by a narrow margin (12 1/2 - 11 1/2). There were some great games played in this Candidates Tournament & they are worth checking out! Speelman ended this game vs Pigusov w/ a nice tactical combo which took advantage of Pigusov's mistake quickly! Enjoy!
Aug-24-14  Howard: Yes, Speelman did have a pretty unusual appearance back in those days.

By the way, Speelman was seeded into the 1991-92 candidates (along with Timman, Yusupov, and Karpov). He was eliminated in the first round though by no other than Short. Close match though---it went into extra innings, as I recall.
